Reading ( 14 marks )
Read the following passage then answer the questions below:
Health for all was the hope in 1988, when the WHO stated that most infectious diseases should disappear or be under control by the end of the 20th century. Scientists were optimistic in those days. After all, in 1980 the world had finally eradicated smallpox, a terrible disease that had killed millions since ancient times.
By the year 2000, the world had made good progress in some areas. For example, we had come close to the eradication of polio, and measles was under control. However, the global health situation had actually got worse in other ways. TB ( tuberculosis ) and malaria were not under control, and AIDS had become a global epidemic. World leaders at the United Nations Millennium Summit therefore agreed new targets. One of these stated that by 2015, " We will have stopped and begun to reduce the spread of AIDS, malaria and other major diseases.
Today, scientists are more pessimistic - and for good reasons. AIDS has killed now over 40 million people and has spread to other regions such as Eastern Europe and China. Many African countries face large population declines by 2050 and a life expectancy as low as 32. Moreover, malaria now kills more people than it did 30 years ago. In southern Africa alone, it kills 3000 children every day. Two million a year die from TB, too. A recent WHO report shows that, without stronger controls, TB will have killed another 36 million by 2020
